Criteria for Funding:
- Funding and assistance are available for developmental and/or innovative activities that enhance teaching and/or student learning. These activities are larger, long-term efforts that are not routine and that are beyond activities expected of a department, college, or individual faculty member.
- Funding is available for the purchase of instructional materials to enhance new or substantially revise existing courses, such as books, CDs, DVDs, software, and the like. Funding is also available for the creation of instructional materials such as CDs, DVDs, and the like.
- When part of a larger effort, funding is available for tuition and registration fees for faculty who wish to expand into a new area of the discipline, to explore a new discipline, to master a new sub-discipline, or to develop a new skill.
- Funding is available for classroom or curricular research for faculty who wish to focus on the scholarship of teaching, including photocopying, postage, and the like.
- Part-time and full-time teaching faculty are eligible to propose Teaching Enhancement Grants. EPA administrative faculty will be considered on an individual basis.
- More than one faculty member from the same department or from different departments may work on a grant. Collaborative, interdisciplinary, diversity-oriented, and technology-oriented activities are encouraged.
- Multi-year grants are encouraged; however, funding for grants is approved on a yearly basis. Directors of grants that require more than one year’s funding are encouraged to submit proposals in subsequent years for further funding.
- The amount of funding available for each Teaching Enhancement Grant is $250–$1,500.
- See restrictions/exclusions below.
Special Notes:
- Funding is competitive. Grant proposals are considered for support by the Hubbard Center Advisory Council--teaching faculty from each of the colleges and Belk Library. The Advisory Council reviews the proposals and makes recommendations for funding to Academic Affairs.
- Due to the competitive nature of these grants and the limited funds available to support this grant program, the Advisory Council may recommend only partial funding of proposed budgets.
- Copyright for CDs or DVDs produced through the Hubbard Center will be held jointly by the faculty member and Appalachian State University. CDs or DVDs may be distributed through commercial vendors upon the recovery of development costs supported by the Hubbard Center.
- Texts, CDs, and DVDs purchased through Hubbard Center grants are housed in and maintained by Belk Library. The Hubbard Center gratefully acknowledges that full or partial funding for the purchase of Library materials for grants may be provided by Belk Library.
Evaluation Process:
Upon completion of the Teaching Enhancement Grant, each faculty member will be asked to estimate the number of hours spent working on the grant and will be asked to complete a short evaluation of their activities. Faculty may be asked to make presentations or conduct workshops to share their experiences with others on campus.
Activities that will NOT be funded include:
- Purchase of equipment or hardware.
- Purchase of instructional support materials to maintain or expand an existing departmental collection (e.g., slides, maps, CDs).
- Food, travel, lodging, or rental of rooms or facilities.
- Reassigned time.
- Salary for graduate assistants, work-study students, or clerical support.
- Research in the discipline.
- Courses for academic credit when they are applied toward a degree program
