Criteria for Funding:
- Funding and assistance are available to help faculty produce textbooks that serve as primary or supplemental texts in courses at Appalachian.
- Part-time and full-time teaching faculty are eligible to propose Textbook Grants.
- More than one faculty member from the same department or from different departments may work on a Textbook Grant. Collaborative, interdisciplinary, diversity-oriented, and technology-oriented textbooks are encouraged.
- See restrictions/exclusions below.
Special Notes:
- Funding supports the material costs of the text. In hardcopy texts, funding supports printing/duplication, paper, covers, binding, reprint permissions, artwork, etc. In electronic texts, funding supports CDs, jewel cases, covers, artwork, reprint permissions, etc. Hubbard Center staff perform all labor--design, proofreading, production / duplication, binding, etc.--at no cost. Because the Hubbard Center only charges for materials and not for labor, the cost to students for these textbooks is very reasonable. Both hardcopy and electronic texts are sold to students through the University Bookstore.
- Departments (or colleges) are required to purchase any remaining copies of textbooks that are not sold after a reasonable amount of time.
- Due to the high cost and time required to obtain reprint fees and the relatively small quantities of textbooks printed, the production of anthologies is not usually feasible.
- Copyright for texts will be held jointly by the faculty member(s) and Appalachian State University. Copyright reverts to the faculty member(s) upon recovery of development costs supported by the Hubbard Center.
- All Textbook Grant proposals are reviewed by the Hubbard Center staff who make final funding decisions.
Evaluation Process:
Upon completion of each Textbook Grant, faculty members will be asked to estimate the number of hours spent fulfilling the terms of the grant. Faculty members will also be asked to complete a short evaluation of their activities.
Activities that will NOT be funded include:
- Reassigned time.
- Travel and subsistence for research to develop the content of the text.
- Salary for faculty, graduate assistants, work-study students, or clerical support.
- Texts for purposes other than student learning (e.g., for student recruitment, departmental policies and procedures, etc.).
