Opportunities for New Faculty
Welcome and Orientation for New Faculty
Conducted annually in cooperation with Academic Affairs, Student Development, and the Faculty Senate, the Welcome and Orientation for New Faculty is a series of informational sessions acquainting new faculty with the Appalachian community and key resources on campus. All new faculty, both full-time and part-time, are encouraged to attend this event. In order to provide support for loved ones relocating to the area, the Hubbard Center concurrently hosts a Welcome and Orientation for Spouses and Partners.
Welcome and Orientation for New International Faculty
Conducted annually in cooperation with the Office of International Education and Development, the Welcome and Orientation for New International Faculty is held a few days after the general Welcome and Orientation. This event complements the general Welcome and Orientation and focuses on information pertinent to new faculty who do not hold American citzenship. All international faculty, both full-time and part-time, are encouraged to attend.
New Faculty Mentoring Program
Research has shown mentoring to be effective in improving new faculty performance and satisfaction. Participants in the New Faculty Mentoring Program are matched with an experienced faculty member to meet twice a month and discuss teaching, service, scholarship, service, citizenship, and other professional issues, as well as personal queries (such as recommendations for veterinarians or local recreation). Although the program is formally conducted during the new faculty member's first year at Appalachian, many new faculty-mentor pairs report that their relationship has lasted for several years.
Workshop on Promotion and Tenure
Each year the Hubbard Center offers a workshop to assist new faculty in achieving promotion and tenure. Recent workshop topics have included the process of applying for promotion and tenure, preparation for promotion and tenure, collection of documentation, and the effect of mentoring relationships. Typically this workshop is held during the spring semester and an email announcement regarding the workshop will be sent to the faculty list serv.
