New Faculty: Before You Arrive—Read This First!

Benefits

In order to receive a paycheck on August 31, 2009, new faculty and staff must enroll online for their benefits. The Benefits Orientation is at www.hrs.appstate.edu. Click on the Faculty tab at the top of the screen, then click on “Benefits”, then click on “New Employee Orientation”. Please review the benefits orientation information and print out the appropriate forms from this website. New faculty and staff should already have received a letter regarding the website and the appropriate forms to be completed from Angela Miller in Human Resource Services. Please return these forms to HRS no later than August 10th in order to receive your August paycheck on time. If you have not received this letter, or if you have any questions about benefits, please contact Angela Miller at (828) 262-6769 or Kathy Hamby at (828) 262-6485.

ID Cards

The University ID card, or AppCard, provides access to services in Belk Library, gated parking lots, and other University facilities. AppCards can also be used as charge, meal, or express accounts. For more information on AppCard options, visit www.foodservices.appstate.edu and click on one of the links below “AppCard Services” on the right of your screen. Each new faculty and staff member will receive an AppCard Authorization Form in the benefits package mailed by the Office of Human Resource Services. An AppCard is then created by presenting the AppCard Authorization Form to the AppCard Office, located on the lower level of Trivette Hall. Their office hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. No fee is charged for the initial AppCard; the fee for replacement cards is $15.00.

Parking

All faculty, staff, students, and visitors must register their vehicle(s) for campus parking privileges. Vehicles may be registered from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Parking Office, located in the Rivers Street Parking Deck. New faculty and staff will need to present their vehicle registration card and driver's license. The parking fee for the entire academic year (August 16 - August 15) is $204.00 for parking in surface lots, or $360.00 for parking in the decks. For full-time permanent employees, the fee will be deducted from paychecks in equal installments on a monthly basis ($17/month for surface lots, $30/month for decks).

Adjunct faculty teaching 6 hours or less, or part-time staff scheduled for 20 hours or less per week, may apply for parking privileges at a reduced rate. These reduced rate permits are sold only on a semester basis, at a fee of $43.00. Summer parking permits for those without an annual permit are available at a cost of $34.00 for full-time permanent employees and $17 for adjunct/part-time employees.

For additional information, visit www.parking.appstate.edu, or call (828) 262-2878.

Computer Access

After a signed contract is returned to the University, new faculty and staff will be added to the university's payroll/personnel system. Faculty and staff can then go to the Appalachian technical support web page at www.support.appstate.edu or link to support from the ASU homepage. From there, click the “Faculty & Staff Support” tab and look under Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for “New Faculty and Staff Information,” which will give a complete checklist of steps to perform to get computer account information. (This may take several days after the University receives your signed contract.) New faculty will then be able to use e-mail and have access to web applications, including the administrative and instructional services provided through the Faculty Portal System. Additional help and support is available at that same web location. Telephone support is available via the Technical Support Office at (828) 262-6266.

Tour

Please note that a campus tour is not part of the Welcome and Orientation for New Faculty and Student Development Staff. Campus tours are available Monday through Saturday except for holidays and University Breaks. Individuals who wish to have a tour of the campus should schedule an appointment by calling the University Visitors Center at (828) 262-2179 or by clicking “Schedule a Visit” at www.admissions.appstate.edu.

Construction

New faculty and staff should also be aware that construction on campus has affected both the flow of traffic and the availability of parking on campus. Please allow extra time for both commuting and parking, especially during the first week of the semester.
